Thoroughbreds are one of the very many breeds of horses that exist. I have had many thoroughbreds in my life and have ridden many of them over the years. I had my one mare for 25 years and she was a wonderful horse. I could ride her anywhere including down the middle of a busy highway without a problem.
Thoroughbreds are considered one the fastest breed of horse. The thoroughbred is a descendant of horses brought to Great Britain in the 17th century. To keep these horses as fast as possible, breeders tried to choose the quickest and strongest horses to use for their breeding horses.
The first thoroughbred appeared in the United States in 1730. Tensions between Great Britain and the colonies slowed down the process of Thoroughbred imports. The Thoroughbred population went down a lot during the Civil War. But the breed has rebounded and is extremely popular in the US.
Thoroughbreds can be used for almost anything except maybe a pack animal. The main thing they are used for is racing. The Kentucky Derby being the biggest race in the US.
There has been a lot of controversy about the horse racing because so many have had to be euthanized after a race because of broken legs. But the majority of horses in the races do NOT break their legs. I, myself, believe that giving horses drugs is the biggest problem because then the horse runs like crazy and doesn’t know that he is injured. In other words, he or she does not feel the pain of whatever injury they have. But I think that the Thoroughbred Association has passed or is going to pass a rule, that certain kind of drugs cannot be used on a horse that is to be raced.
Many times these thoroughbreds after they are done racing are used for jumping show horses. They are very good jumpers. And they are also used for what is called eventing which is a combination of cross country, show jumping and dressage.
Cross country competition consists of riding a course over a number of miles over jumps, through streams, up and down hills and in general a very, very physical thing to do for the horse.
The Dressage consists of doing movements of many different kinds with great precision and also is very strenuous for the horse to do.
The Show jumping phase is a course of high jumps up to five feet in the ring. So in general the thoroughbred is a very tough horse no matter what it is doing and it is always willing to go the distance. They are truly great horses. I would not recommend a beginner rider go out and purchase a thoroughbred simple because they are on the high strung side.
